Deer Valley, USA, January 10, 2018 – As if his 12-victory streak wasn’t enough, Mikaël Kingsbury has just written another important chapter in his young career: he has become the freestyle skier with the most World Cup victories. Today’s 47th gold medal puts him ahead of the legendary Hannah Kearney and Donna Weinbrecht.
“Beating Hannah and Donna, and now being alone at the top, feels incredible because those athletes are true legends. I am honoured.”
This first-place finish also adds to Kingsbury’s thus-far perfect score this season, with five wins in as many starts.
“I was once again able to ski my best in the final and super final. I worked hard these last few days to maintain my energy level and be 100% on competition day. During training, I didn’t do as many runs and the strategy paid off,”
shared Kingsbury, who qualified the Deer Valley course as best in the world.
Kingsbury also had a heartfelt thought for his teammate Philippe Marquis, sidelined today by an injury sustained in training. The Quebec City skier is back home where his condition is being evaluated daily.
In 13 starts on the “Champion Course”, Kingsbury won eight times and collected a total of 11 medals.
On the women’s side, Andi Naude, who was celebrating her birthday today, was the best Canadian with a sixth-place finish. The Penticton, BC native has had an excellent season so far with a 4-3-3-4-6 finish streak.
Skiers will be back in action tomorrow evening in Deer Valley at the Visa Freestyle International Ski World Cup for the second part of this double moguls program.
