In 2014, just two years after picking up skis for the first time, Anouk Purnelle-Faniel was named to the national team. One of her coaches, JF Cusson, has said that he has never seen anyone progress so quickly through the season.
It started in 2012 when Anouk was still in high school and looking to pick up a new sport and decided to give skiing a try since many of her friends were ski fanatics. She picked up slopestyle near the end of the school year and things immediately clicked.
This shouldn’t surprise us, Anouk is an incredible athlete who had been a gymnast since the age of eight. The training she had from a young age helped her develop air sense and balance that helped accelerate her comfort level on skis.
Anouk entered her very first competition in January of 2014 and ended up winning The North Face Open. This performance would catch the eye of the national team program that would recruit her later that year. Anouk surprised the freestyle community by finishing fourth at the 2014 Dew Tour, a competition she didn’t even know whether she’d have a spot in and had originally gone as a alternate.
By 2015 she had already earned her first X Games invite and ultimately finished in seventh place. Anouk continued her impressive 2015 by finishing fourth in her first FIS World Cup competition when she finished just off the podium at the Park City event.
When she’s not skiing, Anouk enjoys spending time with her five-year-old rescue rabbit, Riki.
