Starting at the age of three, Matt Wilcox would commute every Saturday to the Georgian Peaks Ski Club with his father, David, and mother, Sandra. His parents would make it clear to him at a young age that he was officially part of a skiing family and wouldn’t be partaking in hockey like many of his friends – something that was hard for Matt to accept at first, but eventually grew thankful for the opportunity to ski so much.
As a kid, Matt was inspired by a family friend by the name of Chris Murphy who was five years his senior. The influence that Chris had on Matt as a child to bring out his imagination on skis pushed him to pick free skiing over ski racing at the age of 10.
Matt grew on in a very small beach community on Georgian Bay called Thunder Beach. His life outside of skiing was greatly shaped by his community and what it offered for outdoor exploration. His favourite pastimes included wake skating the waters of Thunder Beach and golfing.
Matt was also the Ontario Cup champion for downhill biking at the age of 15.
In 2016, Matt was named to the inaugural Park & Pipe NextGen Team.
