Park City, Utah, February 4, 2017 – Under calm conditions, the Canadian moguls team delivered strong performances in Deer Valley, Utah. Mikaël Kingsbury, Andi Naude and Marc-Antoine Gagnon unleashed on the iconic course to finish first, second and second, respectively.
This is not the first time Mikaël claims double gold in Deer Valley. He first pulled off this great feat during the 2015 season. After Mikaël’s first place performance on Thursday night in single moguls, it was clear that momentum had swung back in his favour. We anticipated a standout performance, and he delivered.
“It’s crazy to pull off back-to-back wins in Deer Valley. For the competitive moguls community, this event rivals the Super Bowl… This weekend I skied strategically, I knew everyone was going to challenge me. It was important to stick to my game plan,”
stated gold medallist Mikaël Kingsbury.
This was Mikaël’s 37th World Cup victory. Mikaël, who now has a total of 58 medals on this circuit, has exceeded the legendary Edgar Grospiron’s record for most World Cup podiums.
Marc-Antoine Gagnon, who lost the final duel against Kingsbury to claim second place, seems to have found his groove as he shook off any evidence of a bad shoulder injury sustained in September 2015. This podium finish will surely boost his confidence as he prepares for the next World Cup in Bokwang, Korea next weekend.
“Being the first dual moguls event of the season, it’s important to be fast, and that’s what I focused on today. It worked out well,”
stated silver medallist Marc-Antoine Gagnon.
On the women’s side, Andi Naude clinched her second World Cup podium of the season, finishing in second place. This is another great result for Andi, as she establishes herself as a top contender on the Canadian squad.
“I’m so happy to be on the podium tonight. It was such a great race… Everyone was pushing it, and the course was really fun to ski. It was difficult, but it brought out the best in all of us,”
said silver medallist Andi Naude.
